Tender moments as Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit celebrate 40th birthdays with family photos

This summer there will be big celebrations in Norway's royal household, as both Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit celebrate their 40th birthdays.

On 20th July, the handsome heir will reach his landmark age followed almost exactly one month later by his wife, on 19th August.

To mark the occasion, the royal couple have released a series of photographs that includes individual portraits and pictures taken with their children.

What's clear from the pictures is just how in love Mette-Marit and Haakon, who wed in Oslo Cathedral on 25th August 2001, remain. Whether walking hand-in-hand or smiling with their heads resting together, they seem utterly devoted to each other — and their family.

Mette-Marit's 16-year-old son Marius, Sverre Magnus, seven, and Ingrid Alexandra, nine, join their parents for a number of photographs, which were taken at the royal residence, Skaugun Estate in Asker.
