Doctor Who's 50th anniversary celebrations have received the royal seal of approval with the news that Sophie, Countess of Wessex is hosting a party at Buckingham Palace.

The mum-of-two, a Doctor Who fan since she was a little girl, will welcome cast members and crew at a reception on 18 November.

Past, present and future Time Lords, like David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, are expected to attend the event. It is taking place just a few days before the series reaches its 50th milestone on 23 November, when the BBC will screen a special episode titled The Day of the Doctor. An official list of guests for the reception is likely to be released nearer the time.

Of course, Sophie is not the only royal 'Whovian'. Earlier this year, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwallvisited the Doctor Who studios at Roath Lock, Cardiff on their summer tour of Wales.

During the visit, the Prince had cast members in fits of laughter as he impersonated a Dalek. Using a voice modulator, he uttered their famous catchphrase, 'Exterminate', and revealed he had been a big fan of the BBC series since he was 15.

The show's lead writer, Stephen Moffat, said at the time, "I haven't thought about how I could weave a meeting between the Doctor and the royal family. But Princes Charles's attempt at being a Dalek was great. There would be a part in the show for him if he wanted it. "Current Time Lord Matt Smith agreed: "He's got the makings of a future Doctor!"
