In his role as Mr Carson, Jim Carter is used to dealing with the nobility. But he upgraded from Lady Mary this week when he had a royal encounter with the Countess of Wessex. It was Sophie's turn to give the Downton Abbey actor a hand, as she helped him call out the winners of a raffle prize at a charity event. Taking centre stage at St George's Church in London, Sophie was attending an engagement for charity Tomorrow's People, of which she is patron. The foundation is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Dressed in a smart tuxedo blazer and cigarette trousers, Sophie looked as elegant as ever as she added a pop of colour to her outfit with a blue and white patterned top. The Countess looked to be enjoying a merry evening out as she mingled with other Downton stars, including Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith, and Penelope Wilton, who portrays Isobel Crawley. Allen Leech, who is known for his role as Tom Branson, and the ITV period drama's series writer Julian Fellowes were also among those introduced to Sophie.

Shunning their elaborate costumes, the famous faces delighted their audience as they each gave a seasonal reading in the 18th century church. Fans then had the opportunity to ask the Downton celebrities about life on the show, after which The Salvation Army performed. The fundraising event was rounded off with a glass of wine and mince pies for guests, with proceeds from the night going to Tomorrow's People. The charity is a national employment organisation that helps excluded and disadvantaged people find work, and avoid long-term unemployment or homelessness. Sophie, who is mum to children Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, is patron of various charities including those dealing with young people, such as Childline, Shooting Star CHASE and St Mary's Wrestwood Children's Trust.
