Queen Mathilde has been powering through with her royal duties after suffering a fall and hurting her knee. The queen of the Belgians was pictured supporting herself on crutches as she carried out an engagement with her husband King Philippe on Wednesday.

Arriving for a meeting at the EU Parliament in Brussels, Mathilde hopped along while her husband of 16 years placed a protective hand around her arm.

The queen managed to maintain her sense of style in spite of her injury, wearing a flattering orange-and-black block colour pencil dress.

Queen Mathilde injured her knee after suffering a fall

Falling just above the knee, Mathilde's brace was clearly on display. The elegant royal, 42, had scooped her fair hair into a chic bun and accessorised with matching orange drop earrings.

As she and Philippe arrived at the headquarters and were greeted by Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, and Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, the queen showed no signs of pain or making complaints.

Mathilde will not need an operation but she will have to wear the brace for several weeks

The group stopped to have their photographs taken, at which point Mathilde gave her crutches to her aide. With a little help from her husband, she was able to stand upright, linking arms with Philippe.

The royal palace declined to comment much about the queen's accident, only confirming that Mathilde had sustained a knee injury during a fall. She will have a brace for several weeks but in the meantime, continue to soldier on with her pre-scheduled engagements.

While it is not yet clear when the accident happened, it seems to have taken place earlier this week. Mathilde welcomed Ertharin Cousin, director of the United Nations World Food Programme, to the royal palace on Monday – and was pictured not wearing a brace.

The gorgeous royal looked brilliant in blue, donning a cobalt-toned dress that featured a ruffled turtle neck for the meeting.
