William and Kate welcome a baby girl: The nation celebrates

The announcement that the nation has a new baby Princess was met by scores of celebratory messages. Prime Minister David Cameron, singer Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Olympic gold medallist Becky Adlington led the enthusiastic wishes for Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton following the arrival of their second child.

"Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their baby girl," tweeted David Cameron. "I'm absolutely delighted for them."

There was much joy outside the Lindo Wing when it was announced that Kate had given birth to a baby girl

Mum-to-be Becky was also thrilled to hear of the little Princess's arrival, writing: "Awwwwe its a girl!!!!! How exciting!! Congratulations Will & Kate! #royalbaby #itsagirl.""Congratulations William and Kate," tweeted Cheryl. "So excited to see our new little princess!! #itsagirl."

Place2Be, one of the charities that the Duchess of Cambridge is the royal patron of, also congratulated the new mum and dad. "Congratulations! Wishing our Royal Patron HRH The Duchess of Cambridge & The Duke of Cambridge well. #RoyalBaby."

Westminster Council have also revealed that they will be turning the local landmarks pink in honour of the little girl's arrival, with Leader of the Council Councillor Philippa Roe saying: "We're thrilled at the news & extend a special welcome to our latest Westminster arrival. "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's second child, who is the Queen's fifth great-grandchild and fourth-in-line to the throne behind Prince George, made her way into the world at 8:34 on 2 May and Kensington Palace two-and-a-half hours later.

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am," Kensington Palace announced on Twitter. "The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry & members of both families have been informed. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."
