William and Kate's second royal baby: All the best moments from the day

At 06.49am on 2 May, Kensington Palace revealed via Twitter that the Duchess of Cambridge had been admitted to St Mary's Hospital to give birth to her second child.

Police guards soon took to their positions outside the Lindo Wing door and the world's media began to gather.

At 11.09 am Kensington Palace announces that "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am".

A second tweet read: "The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth."

The royal enthusiasts, fans and media gathered celebrated the birth of the baby girl.

The birth of the new Princess of Cambridge was later announced by unofficial Town Crier Tony Appleton.

At 12.30 pm two footmen placed the official declaration of the birth on an easel outside Buckingham Palace.

Just a few hours later, the Queen seemed to have acknowledged the arrival of the new Princess by wearing pink during her day of engagements.

Britain's monarch was visiting Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire.

Crowds cheered wildly as William, who had briefly left Kate's side to pick up son George at Kensington Palace, carried the prince into the hospital, where he would meet his new sibling.

It was little Prince's second official outing in the UK. The first being the day he was introduced to the world outside the same hospital.

Prince William gave his little Prince a kiss after charming the crowds with his shy wave.

At 6.11 pm, less than 12 hours after welcoming their new daughter, the couple left the hospital and introduced the little Princess to the world.

The new Princess of Cambridge slept soundly cradled in her mother's arms.

According to The Telegraph, Kate expressed fears the little princess might be "cold" but Prince William reassuringly said: "No, she's fine, she's good."

The photographers captured the magical moment on camera and millions watched the moment live on their televisions.

Swaddled in a white G. Hurt & Son blanket and wearing a little bonnet, the newest member of the royal family slept peacefully, oblivious to the global excitement surrounding her arrival.

Many have already said that the Princess is the spitting image of her mother.

The 33-year-old Duchess wore a bespoke cream-and-yellow silk dress by Jenny Packham – the designer behind the blue polka dot dress she wore when she left the hospital with Prince George.

As the Cambridges left the hospital, William gestured with two fingers, meaning he is now a proud father of two.

The couple left without speaking to the press. According to sources, the couple were worried it was too cold for their newborn daughter.

To honour the arrival of William and Kate's baby girl, some of London's most iconic landmarks turned pink on the evening of Saturday 2 May.

The BT Tower in Fitzrovia displayed a pink rolling banner declaring, 'It's a girl!'.

Tower Bridge, the London Eye and The Golden Jubilee Bridge were also flooded with pink light.
