William's appearance will be filmed in London in mid-October before being aired on CCTV1 – the station with the largest audience in China. A statement released by the Palace said the Duke is "grateful" for the opportunity to discuss the matter with such a wide audience.

"The Duke is grateful to have this opportunity to explain how people around the world must work together to save some of the planet's most critically endangered species before they are lost forever," the statement read. "He considers this issue an important test for his generation's ability to solve the much more complex global challenges it will face in the decades to come."

Prince William made an official visit to China in March

William is the president of the organisation United for Wildlife and has campaigned against the illegal trade in elephant ivory, working to raise awareness among the Chinese during his official visit earlier this year.

The Duke was said to have raised the issue with the president of China when they met in Beijing earlier in the year and was said to have been "encouraged by China's willingness to play its part in the fight against the illegal wildlife trade".

News of Prince William's television appearance comes after a senior royal source confirmed to HELLO! magazine that he looks set to make an official overseas visit with his wife the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton next year.
