They aren't the words you'd expect to hear from the future King – but on Wednesday Prince William had a group of brokers in hysterics when he told his wife Kate to "stop flirting now". The second-in-line to the throne was joking around with his wife as she tried to seal a business deal over the phone.

William and Kate were taking part in the ICAP Charity Day in the City, London where they turned brokers for the day.

The couple had to use their best powers of persuasion to help raise money for a variety of charities, including SkillForce, of which William is patron and SportsAid and Place2Be, of which Kate is patron.

Prince William joked to his wife: "Catherine, I think you can stop flirting with them now!"

"Catherine, I think you can stop flirting with them now!" William joked as he eavesdropped on Kate's phone conversation with a broker named Andrew.

Turning to broker Brett Lincoln he raised an eyebrow and said, "Sorry my wife is just embarrassing me!"

William, who was feeling particularly bullish, found himself speaking to an old classmate, Eton-educated broker called Vachan.

"Vash, you old dog! How are you? What are you doing?" said William. "Clearly you're not progressing with your career. I'm good, it's been such a long time. Is this what you did with our maths at school? It's good to speak to you again."

The Prince seemed more confident in closing deals as he asked one broker: "Come on, 850 is a good plan, a good start to the day. Let's get moving!"

Looking over at Kate, he added: "Hmmm, I think there is rather more haggling going on over that side of the desk."

Kate said she was "impressed" with the men's skyscraper heels

The royals were faced with a number of employees who had donned fancy dress for the annual charity day. Kate, who channelled business chic in an L.K. Bennett teal suit and was showing off her new shorter hair, looked particularly amazed by one broker, Nigel Halligan, wearing stiletto heels.

"I really don't know how you women do it!" Nigel told reporters after the royals had left. "Kate told me she was impressed because they were so high and said I should put my feet up the minute they had gone. I certainly took her advice on that one."

Dan Lebeau, who showed William the ropes at one point, added that the Prince showed far more interested in his black patent heels. "That was the first thing he asked me – where on earth did I get them from," said Dan.

During their visit William and Kate, both 33, also showed off their competitive streaks, taking part in a game of table tennis.

"Come on, let's try and have more than a rally," teased William, adding to his famously competitive wife, "'You're not normally this polite when we play."

"Or this quiet," she retorted.

This year ICAP is supporting 13 charities in the UK. Last year the annual charity event raised £8million globally in just one day.
