The Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, is known for her beautiful hair, but even for the British royal, a new style can take some getting used to.

The mother-of-two told friends she wasn't entirely happy with her recent haircut by the famous stylist Richard Ward, even referring to it as her "mum fringe."

Kate told friends she wasn't keen on her new hairstyle

Richard, who Kate has relied on to create her flawless looks in the past, appeared on This Morning to talk about her new style. Dubbed the "gringe", the cut is essentially a grown-out fringe, which the stylist describes as: "A longer, sweeping fringe is a great way to experiment without the risk factor of a complete restyle."

He put his expertise to the test when he restyled Kate's hair, but The Sun stated The Duchess had told friends: "I was a bit unsure about it. I call it my 'mum fringe.'"

The Duchess debuted her new hairstyle on December 9

Kate debuted her new hairstyle when she and husband Prince William attended the ICAP Charity Day on December 9. The beautiful brunette showed off her glossy locks, which fell just below her shoulders.

While the 33-year-old has been sporting a chic fringe in recent months, it seems that she has been slowly growing it out. At the charity event her fringe was parted to the middle and swept to the side, adding to the gorgeous layered effect.

It has been suggested The Queen may be behind Kate's new look

The Daily Mail has suggested the Queen, who has a more traditional approach to fashion and hairstyles, is the reason for Kate's more 'sensible' look. The publication reported that The Duchess was advised to ditch her longer hair do for a length which suited a high-profile royal more.

Kate has been making her look even more sophisticated since she first debuted her fringe in September, after returning to her official duties following the birth of her Princess Charlotte.

Although she may not be too keen on her latest hair cut, she is still a fashion symbol, with Princess Victoria of Sweden even taking style inspiration from the British royal. Victoria showed off her baby bump in the same Seraphine maternity dress which Kate wore when she was pregnant with her daughter.
