Royal watchers have been treated to a set of official portraits of Denmark's cutest twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. The photos were released to mark the siblings' fifth birthday on Friday.

One of the images was taken during the Christmas break in Australia by proud mum Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, who hails from Hobart, Tasmania.

While a photographer is usually hired to take pictures of the royals for official portraits, Mary decided that this year she would step behind the camera, just like she did for the twins' second birthday.

In one sweet snap Vincent and Josephine were pictured together, standing next to one of Australia's most famous animals, a cute koala.

The picture could have been taken at the Bonorong Park Wildlife Centre – a sanctuary in Tasmania that the royals have visited on previous years. Back in 2008 Prince Frederik and Princess Mary's eldest son Prince Christian met his first friendly koala during a private visit.

The other two photos of the twins seem to have been taken in Denmark, judging by the youngsters' warm winter clothing. Vincent and Josephine, who is 26 minutes younger than her twin, were pictured individually, leaning against a tree in a forest.

Mary and Frederik are expected to mark the twins' birthday in private, with their eldest children Prince Christian, ten, and eight-year-old Princess Isabella.

Other members of the royal family may also join the celebrations, including the twins' grandparents Queen Margrethe II and Henrik, the Prince Consort and their young cousins, Prince Joachim's children.

Read on for ten facts about the royal twins...

1. In August 2010 the Danish Royal Court announced the exciting news that Crown Princess Mary was expecting twins and six months later on 8 January 2011, Vincent and Josephine were born at Rigshospitalet, the Copenhagen University Hospital.

2. Vincent was born at 10.30am local time, with his sister's birth taking place 26 minutes later. The twins were Frederik and Mary's third and fourth child, following Prince Christian in 2005 and Princess Isabella in 2007. Similar to royal arrivals around the world, Denmark marked the occasion with a 21-gun salute.

3. The twins are currently fourth and fifth-in-line to the Danish throne. As descendants of Queen Victoria, both of the twins are also in line for the British throne.

4. Three months later on 14 April, their christening took place at the Church of Holmen where it was announced the twins would be known as Prince Vincent, Count of Monpezat and Princess Josephine, Countess of Monpezat. Vincent counts Spain's King Felipe as one of his godparents, while Josephine's includes her aunt, Princess Marie of Denmark.

5. In 2012, Vincent and Josephine's grandmother Queen Margrethe II honoured them with the Commemorative Ruby Jubilee Medal, which was followed by the Commemorative 75th Birthday Medal in 2015, to mark the monarch's milestone birthday.

6. The twins share their birthday with iconic singers David Bowie and Shirley Bassey, while they share the star sign Capricorn with the Duchess of Cambridge, who celebrates her big day on 9 January.

7. They also share their birthday with the late king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, and speaking after the birth, proud father Frederik joked Denmark may have a 'Prince Elvis' very soon. However, it was later confirmed the parents had chosen Vincent.

8. Vincent and Josephine, who have often been described as "cheeky" and "playful" by the Danish media, are often seen pulling funny faces at royal events.

9. In July 2015, Princess Josephine broke her arm during a horse riding lesson, however, just weeks later the young royal was seen playing with her siblings in a blue cast. At the time, Princess Mary thanked well-wishers for their concern.

10. Similar to Britain's Prince George, both Vincent and Josephine have joined their parents for royal duties, most famously taking part in a tree planting ceremony in Greenland in August 2014.
