Prince William has opened up about one of his most important roles – fatherhood. The dad-of-two was giving an interview with the BBC's Nick Witchell when he spoke about his "normal family" and the relationship he has with his son Prince George.

When asked whether his child is starting to realise he isn't part of a normal family, William replied: "Well, as far as we're concerned, within our family unit we are a normal family.

"I love my children the same way any father does and I hope George loves me the same way any son does to his father, so we are very normal in that sense."

"I love my children the same way any father does," said William

The future King added: "And you know, George, there'll be a time and a place to bring George up and understand how he fits in the world. But right now, it's just a case of keeping a secure, stable environment around him and showing him as much love as I can as a father."

The protective dad, who also has a daughter Princess Charlotte with his wife Kate, went on to address claims that he is "workshy".

William, 33, balances his royal duties with fatherhood, as well as his job as an air ambulance pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity. This balance has meant that the Prince has received criticism for not apparently fulfilling royal obligations.

The future King added: "There'll be a time and a place to bring George up and understand how he fits in the world"

"To be honest, I'm going to get plenty of criticism over my lifetime and it's something that I don't completely ignore, but it's not something I take completely to heart," said William.

"I'm concentrating very much on my role as a father. I'm a new father and I take my duties and my responsibilities to my family very seriously and I want to bring my children up as good people with the idea of service and duty to others as very important. But if I can't give my time to my children as well, I worry about their future."

William said he will be "the first person" to accept more royal responsibility from the Queen

Explaining that royal duty is something he takes very seriously, William said: "I think you've got to develop into the duty role. It's something I take very seriously... I've got my fingers in many pies at the moment."

When, and if, the Queen decides to hand down more responsibilities to William, he will be "the first person to accept them," he said.

"There's an order of succession and I'm at the bottom at the moment, so there is the time and space and future to take on more and develop more," William said. "My grandmother and my father are 150 per cent supportive behind everything that I'm doing – and Harry and Catherine."
