It's a very special day in the Swedish royal household. Prince Nicolas, the son of Princess Madeleine and Christopher O'Neill, is celebrating his first birthday, and in honour of the occasion, his proud mother has shared a public message for her baby boy, along with a new photograph. "Happy Birthday Nicolas! You are our sweetheart and we love you to the moon and back," Madeleine wrote alongside a brand new image of her son, which shows him looking up at the camera with his bright blue eyes.

Nicolas' birthday comes just five days after his mother's – Madeleine celebrated her 34th birthday on 10 June, and in keeping with tradition, a photo was released to commemorate the event, which was taken at the christening of Madeleine's nephew Prince Oscar in May.

No doubt Madeleine and Chris have something special lined up for little Nicolas, who is the younger brother of their two-year-old daughter Princess Leonore. In honour of Leonore's second birthday in February, her parents arranged for her to have a traditional tea party at their home in London, and later shared a sweet photo of the princess enjoying her special day.

Madeleine and American-British financier Chris, 41, relocated to London last year with their young family, but they regularly visit Sweden to carry out official duties and attend family gatherings, including King Carl Gustaf’s 70 birthday celebrations in April.

At the start of the month, they returned for a very special event indeed – Princess Leonore's first official engagement, which took place in her duchy, the Gotland province. The little girl was accompanied by both her parents, as she visited a horse farm, and later the Gotland Museum to view a new child-friendly exhibition.
