The Duchess of Cambridge has succeeded the Queen as the patron for Action For Children.  Kate's new position with the charity was announced following the monarch's decision to step down as head of the organisation, along with patronages with 24 other bodies.

Sir Tony Hawkhead, chief executive of Action For Children, said everyone at the charity was "thrilled" to learn Kate will be taking over the role. "It is a great honour to begin what I am sure will be a long association with a member of the royal family, with whom we already have a relationship following visits to some of our services in 2015," he said.

"The Duchess has an interest in many of the issues our teams deal with across the UK, particularly around emotional well-being and mental health.

"On behalf of the 390,000 children and families we help, our supporters, trustees and staff, I offer a warm welcome to the Duchess of Cambridge as our new royal patron."

Action For Children helps to support some of the UK's most vulnerable and neglected children and young people. In February last year, mum-of-two Kate visited two of the charity's 650 services: Cape Hill Children's Centre and Sandwell Family Partners in Birmingham.

Action For Children is the second patronage Kate has received following Tuesday's announcement. She has also taken over as the head of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) Wimbledon.

It has since been revealed that Prince Harry will be the new patron of the RFU, England rugby's governing body, Prince Charles will take over the Holocaust Day Memorial Trust, and Prince William the Welsh Rugby Union.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "Her Majesty is currently Patron of more than 600 organisations and has enjoyed a close and active association with a great number of them throughout her reign. Her Majesty will continue to serve as Patron to hundreds of charities and institutions but will now share this work with her family. Many of the organisations listed below already have other Members of the Royal Family as Vice-Patrons or Presidents which will ensure a smooth transition."
