Members of the Swedish royal family united for a sombre memorial service on Monday, held in honour of the victims of Friday's attack in Stockholm. King Carl XVI Gustaf and his wife Queen Silvia were joined by their daughter Crown Princess Victoria, their son Prince Carl Philip, Victoria's husband Prince Daniel and Carl Philip's wife Princess Sofia, who is expecting her second baby.

The royals arrived at City Hall in Stockholm, clad head-to-toe in black. At noon, a national minute's silence was observed, after which the army band played Segnale Solenne. Two flags were seen flying at half-mast. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven gave a speech, praising the people of Stockholm, authorities and the police service for showing support to each other following the terror attack. Addressing those affected by the incident, the prime minister said: "You are not alone, we are thinking of you. All of Sweden stands with you."

On Saturday, Crown Princess Victoria visited the scene of the atrocity, which left four people dead and 15 injured after a lorry was driven down a pedestrian street and into a department store. The crown princess was clearly overcome with emotion, as she wiped away tears while laying flowers at the site.

Victoria's appearance came shortly after her father King Carl XVI Gustaf gave a speech. He revealed that he had been in Brazil on the day of the attack, but flew back straight away to his home country when he heard the tragic news. On behalf of the royal family, he said his thoughts went to the victims of the attack. "We are all shaken by what happened," said the king, adding: "It is also hopeful to see the care that people show each other. It demonstrates the power of our society. Those of us who want to help outnumber those who wish us harm. That knowledge gives me comfort and confidence." He concluded by saying: "Sweden is, has long been, and will continue to be a safe and peaceful country."
