Although Tom was banned from Wills' company after his drug-taking was revealed, Charles has made it clear he is determined to care for his wife-to-be's son
Prince Charles has long played a role in the lives of his future stepchildren. In 1999, when Tom's involvement with drugs made headlines, Charles took a strong hand in banning him from William's circle until he cleaned up his act. And Laura once worked as a £3.50-an-hour waitress and dishwasher at a café, accepting the job after Charles said he thought it would be a good experience for the then 21-year-old debutante.

Recently, Prince Charles set up a £2-million trust for Tom and Laura, who are said to be regarded as "royals without titles" on their visits to his home. "To all intents and purposes, Prince Charles now has a second family," said a royal source. "He is determined that Laura and Tom should be looked after and supported if the worst happens to him."
