Explaining about his morning routine on the video description, Barry wrote: "In the video each student is given the chance to showcase their personal handshake with me. I started doing this in the efforts to build close relationships with my students… We do it every day. I do it to instill trust, energy and excitement in each student. I have found that no matter what might be going on at home or may have happen in another class when it's time to do their handshake they brighten up. They enjoy it so much and the fact that I take the time to learn it with them means a lot to them."

He also opened up about the fun handshakes with People magazine, saying: "I had a simple handshake with one student last year who wasn't even in my class, but every day she would wait for me in the morning so we could do our handshake and I saw how powerful it was… I saw they became more invested in me because I took time to do a five-second handshake with them. They could see that I care about them." The head teacher of the school, Ashley Park, revealed her pride in Barry's clever idea, telling People: "He's building a special and authentic relationship with each and every student. This strong relationship makes it possible for him to hold his students to high expectations, and have them respond with determination and hard work."
