Norma Cook, who reached online fame after moving in with her 31-year-old neighbour Chris Salvatore, has sadly passed away aged 89 after a long battle with leukaemia. Chris had taken a break from work and moved Norma into his home to care for her after she was told she would have to move into a nursing home, and confirmed the sad news of her passing on Instagram.
He wrote: "It's with a heavy heart that I share the news that earlier this morning the world lost a truly inspiring, beautiful woman. Norma is now resting peacefully in the eternal and while she may no longer physically be with us, her spirit will continue to fill the hearts of so many people. Perhaps Norma's lasting legacy is that her story helped the world to see the true meaning of love. Norma reminded me that we all are created to love and all desire to be loved… Each of us is lovable even with all of our differences. Love has no boundaries. May you rest in peace my sweet sweet lady, Norma." Followers were quick to offer their condolences, with one writing: "I'm sorry for your loss, a lot of love for you." Another added: "You did a great job! World needs some more people like you!"
Chris, who regularly shared snaps of his friendship with Norma on social media, had previously opened up about his decision to welcome Norma into his home, telling Today: "She couldn't be happier that I asked. I was over there visiting most days anyway. She called me the grandson she never had, I just couldn't do that [place Norma in a nursing home] to someone who is like my own grandmother. Moving her in… It feels as though it was meant to be all along. It's really fulfilling to be there for her."
