Where to travel like Sir David Attenborough

Last month the Queen turned 90 and in early May another national treasure celebrated the same milestone birthday – Sir David Attenborough. Over the years Sir David has travelled far and wide, venturing from popular tourist haunts to more off-the-beaten-track destinations.

The broadcaster and naturalist, who is known for his programmes including Life On Earth and The Blue Planet, has taken viewers to some truly awe-inspiring places.

PARAGUAY – 1950s

In the early part of his career, Sir David took viewers to the natural history of South America as part of his Zoo Quest expeditions. Paraguay was the location of the fifth Zoo Quest in 1959, where David roamed the country's grasslands and wetlands and introduced viewers to butterfly birds, armadillos and oven birds.

BALI – 1960S

The sixties saw the broadcaster travel across the globe to the South Pacific, Japan and Australia's Northern Territory to film a string of programmes. The Miracle of Bali, released in 1969, featured three episodes exploring the Indonesian island's traditional music and culture, including animistic rituals and festivals, with a focus on Balinese village Peliatan.

RWANDA – 1970s

1979 was the year highly acclaimed documentary Life on Earth was first broadcasted and was the first in the series of David's Life programmes. The pioneering shows saw the naturalist travel the globe, following the evolution of life on planet earth, with one of the most famous scenes being a face-to-face encounter with a group of mountain gorillas at Dian Fossey's sanctuary in Rwanda.

TANZANIA – 1980s

In 1984, David travelled across the world to film Living Planet, a follow-up to Life on Earth. In the second episode, he explored the Frozen World and described how creatures adapt to living in extremes of temperature and sub-zero climates, such as the groups of plants and animals that survive beneath Kilimanjaro.

SEYCHELLES – 1990s

In 1998, David's famous Life of Birds was first broadcasted, a series which educated viewers on the day-to-day habits of birds and the lengths they go to to protect their young. He travelled to a paradise island in the Seychelles, where the Sooty Tern seabirds go to lay their eggs.

ARIZONA – 2000s

Planet Earth in 2006 was the first of David's programmes to be filmed in high definition and took viewers around the world to the Andes, Africa's Sahara and Death Valley in California. He showed how animals searched for food in unforgiving desert landscapes such as the Sonoran in Arizona.

NAMIBIA – 2010s
