When you think of holidays, images of white sandy beaches, crystal blue waters, exotic wildlife and hidden city treasure troves come to mind. For most of us, an exciting break usually means jetsetting off abroad and escaping the gloomy British weather – but the UK actually boasts some incredibly beautiful locations where you can have a wanderlust-inducing experience without breaking the bank. New research carried out by Hampton by Hilton has unearthed five stunning UK destinations – and when they showed a group of Brits photos, 76 per cent of those surveyed misidentified them as being located abroad. We take a look at these must-visit havens, and find out why they’re ideal for a staycation sure to give your friends major holiday envy.

MYSTERY LOCATION ONE

Where Brits guessed this is: 26 per cent think this is a cove in Greece, while 21 per cent guessed it was in Cyprus. Third place for guesses was Malta with 15 per cent of the vote.

Where it actually is: Dorset! These crystalline waters, impressive cliffs and colourful flowers make up Lulworth Cove, a popular tourist hotspot for those making the most of the British summer. It’s not just the sandy beach and breathtaking views which attract holidaymakers; adventurers also explore the World Heritage site where dinosaur fossils have been discovered in recent decades.

MYSTERY LOCATION TWO

Where Brits guessed this is: Over half of those asked guessed that this was in Japan, while China took the second spot with 20 per cent of guesses.

Where it actually is: Kew Gardens, Richmond. These Royal Botanical Gardens offer a peaceful haven amidst the hustle and bustle of London, not to mention they are host to a series of popular events from the Christmas at Kew lights show to popular horticultural festivals. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a tropical paradise as you wander around taking in all of the unusual and eye-catching plants, as well as a few British classics you’re sure to recognise.

MYSTERY LOCATION THREE

Where Brits guessed this is: 35 per cent guessed France, while 21 per cent went further afield and voted for California.

Where it actually is: Biddenden Vineyards, Kent. Wine enthusiasts don’t need to venture to France or Italy to take in some seriously impressive vineyards – these Kent grounds are just as striking! The family who run the estate have been producing award-winning wines, ciders and juices since 1969 and will happily take you on a tour to check out the endless grapes they are growing, before tucking into a Ploughman’s Platter of local cheeses.

MYSTERY LOCATION FOUR

Where Brits guessed this is: A quarter of Brits believed this cathedral to be located in Spain, while 19 per cent thought it might be in France.

Where it actually is: York! This impressive building is actually York Minster, a dazzling cathedral in the heart of the city. Climb up the central tower for jaw-dropping views of the landscape, or go underground and explore the Undercroft, a new project taking you on a journey through some of the biggest moments in York’s history. Bookworms will also want to stop off in the Old Palace where hundreds of books line the impressive shelves.

MYSTERY LOCATION FIVE

Where Brits guessed this is: 37 per cent thought this was in Scotland, while others tipped New Zealand and Canada to be the home of this awe-inspiring lake.

Where it actually is: The 37 per cent were correct – this is Loch Lomond in Scotland! This National Park is home to the gorgeous Trossachs, impressive mountains that are home to some beautiful hiking trails. It’s a dream for nature enthusiasts as there are countless forests, lochs, farmlands and rivers gracing the landscape, waiting to be explored.
