Discover Whitby, the picturesque filming location for Oscar-nominated film Phantom Thread

Phantom Thread was filmed in North Yorkshire

The snow swept North Yorkshire coastline feels a long, long way from the sunny shores of California at the moment. But as the stars celebrate at the Oscars, all eyes will be on wintry Whitby and it's picturesque neighbouring villages. The dramatic backdrop takes a starring role as the location for Best Picture nominated Phantom Thread. Sweeping views of Robins Hood Bay can be seen from the window where Best Actor contender Daniel Day Lewis, who plays controlling fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock in the movie, sips his tea.

And his appearance in the tiny village of Lythe caused something of a stir as residents took to casually walking their dogs past the local postoffice / petrol station / sandwich shop to try and catch a glimpse of Daniel's final scenes before he retires from acting.

The North Yorkshire coast is popular with many Hollywood stars

But the actor isn't the only Hollywood A-Lister to have frequented the North Yorkshire coast. The area has a warm place in Dame Judi Dench's heart as she used to spend her summer holidays here as a child and became an ambassador for the area. American actress Gwyneth Paltrow starred in Possession back in 2002 which was shot in the region and was pictured buying a piece of famous Whitby Jet jewellery and bizarrely as you walk the quaint cobbled streets of the seaside town of Whitby, Elle MacPherson and Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs are pictured posing separately in the towns Victorian fancy dress photo booth.

In between Whitby and Lythe sits the the serenely beautiful Raithewaite Estate which became a base for Daniel Day Lewis and the film crew during the shoot. Covering 100 acres the coastal retreat is the perfect place for any A-lister to relax and disappear to with it's luxuriously spacious stone cottages, a private six-bed exclusive lakehouse and two hotels with discreet and super attentive staff on call to accommodate any celebrity style request you may have.

The peaceful estate is nestled amongst immaculate manicured gardens which also doubles as an instagrammable backdrop for spring and summer weddings; a picturesque lake, fields with sheep grazing, and it is mere steps away from a breathtaking country walk or the wide beaches of Sandsend with it's views of Whitby Abbey, which of course inspired Bram Stokers Dracula. Raithewaite Estate may be a long way from Hollywood but it is definitely a shining star along the North Yorkshire coast.
