Although February’s fashion weeks present Autumn/Winter collections, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was Spring/Summer. This NYFW  has constructed our new motto for AW23 dressing: ‘more lingerie, less trousers’...

As always designers provided thought-provoking collections (take Tory Burch’s deconstruction of traditional feminine beauty, for example), notable trends that we’re 100% going to copy and plenty of styles on the runway that can easily be added to your wardrobe.

As ever, the FROW clientele was stellar. Lindsay Lohan, Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller opted for more ‘front row-chic’, whilst Julia Fox channelled her inner fashion week Doja Cat and rocked some wild looks.

The street style was also A-star. It appeared that various shades of yellow, metallic boots (preferably over the knee), violet hues, floral print and Harry Styles-approved rosettes should be on your style agenda in the Big Apple.

The runway boasted similar vibes of complete variety. Shows put a plethora of new trends on our radar, cemented the styles that aren’t going anywhere from 2022, and versatile ways of layering with items we can guarantee you already have at home.

Hello! Fashion finds the biggest NYFW trends you can easily recreate

We know that stripes will never go out of style, just look at the iconic Breton. But this season it appears the term ‘oversized’ has gone from a silhouette to a style of stripes, with Coach, Carolina Herrera and Proenza Schouler suggesting they are the way forward. Coach made a case for knitted midi dresses, whilst Carolina Herrera took monochrome dressing and created chunky striped bandeau gowns in various lengths. Proenza Schouler took black, beige and tan and layered a striped dress over tan leather trousers.

Lingerie everything

LaQuan Smith

We were unsure whether the outerwear as underwear trend would be one that stands the test of time. But it has. And surprisingly, the audacious dress style that had its moment in 2022 only seems to be getting stronger and more daring. Kim Shui, LaQuan Smith and Area were amongst those who displayed variations of this (what seems to have become permanent) bold trend. Got an event where you’d like to be the centre of attention? This is it.

Rosettes

Sandy Liang

Rosettes have been high on our sartorial radar since Fashion month last Autumn, when Sandy Liang and Prada upped their floral game with the applique style (though there’s no name quite like Magda Butrym for this adornment). Christian Siriano made statement rosettes a dominant theme throughout its Fall 2023 show whilst Naeem Khan opted for an elegant shoulder design on an opulent jacquard gown, and Sandy Liang brought the trend from from its Spring show to Fall, using dainty rosettes in romantic pink and red hues to add a pop of colour to a little white dresses.

Viva Magenta

Naeem Khan

Lots of shows embraced Pantone’s colour of the year ‘Viva Magenta’. Bright purple was a major street style trend, but deeper, reddish-purple hues dominated the runway. Christian Siriano’s 56-look show epitomised the Viva Magenta hue. Altuzarra’s off the shoulder leather dresses and satin two pieces were perfectly plum, and Naeem Khan created red carpet worthy velvet dresses, fur coats and printed metallic gowns.

No trousers

Dion Lee

What could possibly be more daring than the dominating lingerie trend? How about just removing lower half attire altogether. And we’re not just talking about a dress with bare legs here. Emily Ratajkowski closed the Simkhai show in a stunning black and silver embellished blazer that stole the limelight (because there were no other garments to steal it), a model donned a conservative black boxy blazer with fuschia lapels at Christian Siriano, paired with black underwear and a pair of tights. A model for Dion Lee was more prepared for the February weather, rocking a shearling grey jacket with tonal knee high boots – minus the trousers, of course.

Kendall Jenner was onto something with her Bottega tights and underwear look back in November 2022…
