The first Monday in May, aka the Met Gala, is always the most hotly-anticipated day in the fashion calendar – and this year is no exception.

Nearly a whole 365 days have passed since style obsessives feasted their eyes on Kim Kardashian's vintage Bob Mackie number from Marilyn Monroe's wardrobe archive, and for 2023, we're pinning our hopes on a similar level of outfit drama.

The 2023 Met Gala will take place on Monday 1st May in New York City. With the exception of the Covid years, since 2005 the gala has always taken place on the first Monday in May. This year's event will mark the opening of the Costume Institute's 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty' exhibition.

The dress code is always linked to the theme of the Costume Institute's spring exhibition, which means that this year, guests will be invited to honour the late Karl Lagerfeld in their outfits.

The legendary German-born designer, who died in 2019, is responsible for some of the fashion sphere's most memorable looks. Having helmed the likes of Fendi, Chloé and, of course, Chanel, the famous creative was renowned for his 'against the grain' outlook.

The exhibition will offer visitors a rare insight into Karl's "unique working methodology", featuring approximately 150 pieces, along with sketches that "underscore his complex creative process and the collaborative relationships with his premières, or head seamstresses", according to The Metropolitan Museum.

In January of this year, it was announced that American Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour will be joining forces with Hollywood A-lister Penélope Cruz, trailblazing screenwriter and actress Michaela Coel, tennis powerhouse Roger Federer and global singing sensation Dua Lipa to co-host the event.

Also known as the Costume Institute Benefit, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising event, organised by Vogue. Suffice to say, the eye-wateringly expensive tickets guarantee an extremely star-studded guest list. Attendees are from all different fields, from fashion, film and sports to music and politics. Making the roster is notoriously difficult, and past guests have included the likes of Rihanna, Beyoncé, Kate Moss, Zendaya and Sarah Jessica Parker. Agonisingly, the guest list is kept secret. But if past years are anything to go by, the 2023 gala will not be short of major names.

The event takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

What happens at the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is an evening affair that begins with a cocktail hour. During this section, guests are invited to walk the red carpet and show off their themed outfits, visit the Costume Institute's spring exhibition and take their seats ahead of a sit-down dinner.

The night brims with special one-off performances, but celebrities are strongly discouraged from documenting their evenings with their adoring fans. (In 2015, Anna Wintour even banned social media from the event.) And so, for your Met Gala fix, stay tuned for Hello! Fashion's red carpet highlights.
