Football fever has gripped the UK. In wake of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the nation is coming together to cheer on 'the boys' as they face off against overseas rivals. Beer gardens are buzzing with excitement, 'England'-plastered bucket hats have resurfaced en masse and impassioned expletives can be heard echoing across the city.

Whether you’re cheering on your team at your local, hosting a watch party, or simply using football as the perfect excuse to style your favourite football shirt, this summer’s match day dressing is all about mixing sporty staples with elevated pieces. The trick is to find the sweet spot between trying a bit too hard and full-blown football hooliganism - which is best left to the lads trip in Magaluf.

According to the experts at Classic Football Shirts, the football jersey is (unsurprisingly) the breakout fashion piece of summer 2026, with US Google search demand for 'Soccercore' up 302 per cent in the past year. Naturally, this makes them a go-to for sporty spectating this summer. Yet, for the footie-phobic, there are ample ways to add a high fashion spin to your pitchside ensemble of choice.

Take it from the pros. For her autumn/winter 2026 collection, It-Brit designer Sinead Gorey invited attendees for a pint, transforming a central London crypt into a low-key pub setting. Models stormed the runway, Desperados in hand, sporting nostalgic Noughties-inspired outfits. Cheryl Cole-approved military jackets were coolly paired with knee-high socks, millennial favourite lumberjack plaid, bottle cap bags and beer opener belt buckles.

Likewise, brands including Conner Ives and Martine Rose have reinvigorated 'blockcore,' transforming classic sports staples into covetable designer gems that have garnered a serious cult following. Dua Lipa, Mia Regan, Maya Jama and Devon Lee Carlson consider themselves fans of the trend.

Here are seven pub and match day outfit ideas guaranteed to score style points, and of course, you can recreate and shop each look.

Lace Trims

Our favourite matchday look? Without question, it's the football jersey and lace combination.

Style an oversized vintage jersey with a lace-trim slip dress or a satin midi skirt finished with romantic lace detailing. The contrast between sporty and feminine pieces feels effortlessly cool- and it's one of the biggest styling trends this summer.

Street style star Emy Venturini nailed the look by pairing an Argentina football sweatshirt with a classy vintage lace-trim skirt, proving football fashion can absolutely have main-character energy.

Denim Touch

The girlies are absolutely winning with this one. Think cropped V-neck football jerseys or tailored waistcoats teamed with baggy, distressed denim jorts or relaxed straight-leg jeans. It’s the ultimate formula- equal parts sporty and street-style approved.

Finish the look with chunky trainers (which we love as you gain extra height without sacrificing comfort), slim retro sunglasses and a statement shoulder bag. Because yes, you can celebrate a goal while carrying a cute little bag.

Chic Co-ord

Not keen on wearing a football shirt? A sleek co-ord is the perfect way to tap into the sports- luxe trend while keeping things polished and feminine. Matching shorts with a zip-up top, a tennis-inspired set or athleisure delivers a perfect look between comfort and style.

Pile on some chunky gold or silver jewellery, as I always do, to make the outfit pop paired with some oversized sunglasses and you have yourself an outfit that can take you from brunch to beers at kick-off.

Capri Pants

Love them or loathe them, capris have officially returned - and this time, they’re undeniably chic.

Fashion insiders are styling them with kitten heels, minimalist leather flip-flops and sleek mules for a flattering and surprisingly elegant silhouette. Add a fitted cropped top and understated accessories, and you’ve got an outfit that's cool enough for the heatwave and fashionable enough to make everyone forget that capris ever disappeared.

The Oversized Dress

Borrowed-from-the-boys dressing has never looked better. An oversized football jersey worn as a mini dress is one of this summer’s easiest styling wins. Layer with biker shorts underneath for comfort (because nobody wants an unexpected Marilyn Monroe moment halfway through celebrating a goal), then finish with either chunky trainers or knee-high boots if you’re leaning into the fashion-girl aesthetic.

For a finishing touch, cinch the waist with a belt bag or throw over a structured blazer. Suddenly your football shirt looks runway-ready. Because this is Britain, you’ll be grateful for the extra layer when the sunshine inevitably clocks off before full-time.

Linen Trousers

Nothing says summer quite like crisp linen. Pair a cropped – or simply tied-up– football jersey with high-waisted linen trousers for the ultimate sporty-meets- holiday look.

Relaxed yet polished, it’s the perfect outfit for those afternoons spent watching football that inevitably turn into evening cocktails- usually because I'm the one suggesting them first.

Sequin Sparkle

Who says sportswear can’t sparkle? One of this season’s biggest styling trends is pairing sportswear with sequins, and honestly, I hope you're on board as much as we our. For a sustainable twist, find your sequinned staple at your local charity shop or vintage store - they are often absolutely brimming with them. Ethical and affordable - a win-win.
