Rita Ora looked phenomenal attending the LuisaViaRoma for UNICEF Winter Gala in St. Barts last night. And the iconic singer did so by channelling a trend she sported not long ago - mermaidcore.

Held in Baie de Saint Jean, the 32-year-old attended the gala with filmmaker husband and BAFTA winner Taika Waititi, wearing a crop top and skirt set from David Koma’s Spring 2023 collection. She channelled the trending mermaid theme through the silhouette of her ensemble, but upped the ante on the ocean vibes as the co-ord playfully replicated octopus tentacles as the motif that added dramatic glam to the set.

The cropped black top used one crystal embellished ‘octopus tentacle’ to provide a single, metallic, asymmetrical strap. It did enough talking that neck bijouterie absolutely wasn’t necessary. It also used matching zip-up, arm length gloves to add to the sophistication, which Rita had customised – her sleeves adorned the octopus detailing for added flair, whereas the pair from the brand’s ready to wear collection are without the embellishing .

The black maxi skirt contained the octopus motif along the edges of the waist line in a flattering v-shape, creating the most elegant midriff design. The mega feather-trimmed hem added a touch of elegance and drama to the classic mermaid silhouette.

Mermaidcore is one of the many ‘core’ trends started on TikTok across the fashion and beauty sphere. And though Rita’s ocean vibes came more from her ensemble than her make-up last night, she recently took the trend to new heights, with literal mermaid gills on her face at the Fashion Awards 2022.

A last-minute entry for the title of mermaidcore Queen 2022?
