Last night, New York Fashion Week bowed out for another season, with Thom Browne’s humming gardenscape, one abuzz with jewel-toned insect motifs, rounding off the keenly-anticipated event.
A particularly colourful innings for the Big Apple, spring/summer 2027 was one for the books, with notable moments ranging from major CEO blunders to epic bouts of 2010s nostalgia (thank you, 7 For All Mankind.)
The fun didn’t stop there. There were new beginnings to celebrate: Henry Zankov enjoyed a vibrant creative director debut at Diane von Furstenberg, juxtaposing fresh colour palettes with the designer’s signature wrap silhouettes; Magda Butrym hopped across the pond to make her NYFW debut, funnelling 80s shoulder pads, patent leather and sensual silks down the catwalk; and US native Conner Ives returned to the schedule, presenting his first collection on American soil with the help of Princess Olympia of Greece, Iris Law and Lila Moss.
The city was quick to debunk its reputation as the overly-commercialised capital. While snippets of classic tailoring emerged in the collections of American powerhouses Calvin Klein, Coach and Michael Kors, each designer offering was coolly subverted via a pop of colour, unexpected trim or clashing print.
This element of surprise was translated into the drawing boards of veteran houses: Tory Burch channelled conventional colour theory with a sprinkling of gold tinsel; Altuzarra unfurled a striking collision of animal prints, plaid and paillettes; and Ralph Lauren injected its bohemian vision with velveteen swathes of 70s fabrics.
The aforementioned, coupled with brands that stuck to their guns (e.g. Tommy Hilfiger’s preppy staples and Hervé Léger’s body-coiling bandage dresses), resulted in a visual feast that toggled between freshness and familiarity - with a myriad of trends to inhale before the turn of the year. Colour Blocking
Unexpected colour combinations were a standout styling choice, with brands including Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Coach, and 7 For All Mankind debuting magnetic palettes that disrupted classic colour theory.
Fringe
The catwalks were animated by flirtatious flickers of Seventies-inspired fringing, courtesy of houses such as Ulla Johnson, Monse, Conner Ives, Kim Shui and Cult Gaia.
Going For Gold
The likes of Ralph Lauren, Altuzarra, Conner Ives and Ralph Lauren made their penchant for metallics evident this season, conjuring tapestries of lustrous silks, sequins and hammered textures in golden hues.
Vintage Florals
Forget bold blooms, this season proved the enduring allure of the vintage-inspired floral. Petite petals in golden tones peppered the runways, with Khaite, Altuzarra and Ralph Lauren emerging as key backers of the style.
Tiger Stripes
The Chanel effect was in full view here. Following Matthieu Blazy’s 2026 Métiers d’Art show – and the tiger-stripe dress later worn by Kendall Jenner – the season’s obsession with the feline print was impossible to ignore.
Avocado
Several hues dominated the week, one of which being avocado green. From Sandy Liang's coquettish knitwear to slinky silks at Monse, the colour tapped into the city's newfound love of dopamine dressing.
All That Glitters
New York is the city that never sleeps - and now it wants to party. Iridescent finishes from sequins to paillettes injected the runways with high-octane glamour. Widerhoeft offered a bridal twist on the look, while Monse, Anna Sui and Ralph Lauren opted for more formal cuts.
Curvy Crinoline
One of the more avant-garde trends to emerge, waved, crinoline hemlines were adapted by an array of designers wanting to infuse their recent displays with playful edge. Khaite, Carolina Herrera, Diotima and PatBo to name a few.
Aqua
Diane Von Furstenberg, Conner Ives, Aknvas and 7 for All Mankind kept the ongoing aqua obsession very much alive, proving that this oceanic shade has never lost its lustre.
Major Texture
Feathers, fringing, shredded metallics, horsehair ruffles, air-light organza, chunky knitwear - just a mere handful of dazzling textures to storm the shows during NYFW. As for the standouts? Area, Diotima, Tory Burch, Kidsuper Studios, Christian Siriano and The Blonds.
