Kate Moss' iconic 3/4 sleeve look is everywhere this summer – here's how a fashion writer recreated the look

There's long been an archival photograph of Kate Moss that's anchored my sartorial mood board. It's the epitome of 90s chic – understated yet effective. But the appeal isn't just in the monochromatic colour blocking, it's also in the top she's wearing. It's neither quite long-sleeved nor quite short-sleeved. Enter the 3/4 sleeve: the in-between silhouette that's everywhere this summer.

Think of it as the upper-half counterpart to the coveted capri pant that have peppered the street style set over the past few months. Taken at a Calvin Klein boutique event at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1995, Kate's look is proof that the 3/4 sleeve has always had enduring appeal. Her outfit consisted of a black 3/4 sleeve top with a streamlined fit, styled with a crisp white skirt that fell just above the knee. The minimalist ensemble was finished with black pointed-toe flats and an icy-toned beauty look, while her blonde hair was neatly tucked behind her ears.

As one of my ultimate sartorial muses, I couldn't resist recreating Kate's archival outfit for myself. I opted for Reformation's black Santino Knit Top due to its elegant boat neckline and 3/4 length sleeves. I paired it with a vintage white linen midi skirt by Dolce & Gabbana, purchased from Nordic Poetry, before finishing the look with black Maison Margiela Tabi flats.

I think the appeal of this silhouette lies in its in-between nature. Much like the ever-unpredictable British weather, there are days when it's too warm for long sleeves but not quite warm enough for a tank top. The 3/4 sleeve offers the perfect balance, covering the forearms to create a softer, more refined silhouette that feels both clean and delicate.

The look also oozes the undone ease of French-girl romanticism. Long before Kate made it her own, the 3/4 sleeve silhouette was a staple in Jane Birkin's wardrobe. In 1974, the actress was photographed during rehearsals for a performance at the Artists' Union Gala wearing a simple white 3/4 sleeve top paired with black briefs and thigh-high leg warmers. It's a tableau fashion enthusiasts know well – unfussy yet impossibly chic.
