There's something incredibly satisfying about looking down at your feet and seeing that flash of two-tone contrast across your ballet pumps.
Perhaps it’s because we recognise them as an archival statement of fashion flair, forever associated with Karl Lagerfeld’s classic 1984 Chanel design. Or perhaps it’s the knowing glances from passersby, many of whom recognise them as Matthieu Blazy’s new Chanel shoes — a pair that has become increasingly difficult to secure since peppering the boulevards of London and Paris.
But it’s not just their covetable status that makes them so appealing. There’s something about a contrasting toe, whether tipped with mint green or vibrant red, that can instantly transform an outfit.
Delicate enough to retain the elegance of a ballet flat, yet striking enough to inject a considered pop of colour into an otherwise monochromatic look, they occupy that sweet spot between understated and statement dressing. One thing is certain: cap-toe shoes are reigning supreme this autumn.
Chanel’s two-tone ballerinas, distinguished by its contrasting toe, have become one of the house’s most recognisable signatures. Following Matthieu Blazy’s debut spring/summer 2026 collection for the maison, which saw the return of the style in bold colourways, the bicolored look has become one of the season’s It-girl buys.
Fast-forward to the autumn/winter 2026 season, and the two-tone trend continued to pepper the runways. At Chanel, Blazy reimagined the house’s 1957 cap-toe pumps, introducing a high-vamp silhouette and square toe shape for a contemporary update. Rendered in suede and reinterpreted as full-length boots, the distinctive design detail was carried across a range of silhouettes, proving its versatility beyond the classic pump.
Elsewhere, designers embraced the look with their own distinctive interpretations, further cementing its growing appeal. Ferragamo presented cream stilettos adorned with contrasting black trim and razor-thin heels, while Saint Laurent unveiled sharply pointed pumps punctuated by metallic cap toes. Isabel Marant, meanwhile, took a bolder approach, pairing red V-shaped stilettos with beige snakeskin tips for a striking clash of colour and texture.
A-listers have also elevated their ensembles with the design – Dua Lipa wore a pair of slingbacks in a pink-and-black hue to Chanel's spring/summer 2027 show while the likes of Sarah Pidgeon, Penelope Cruz and Tilda Swinton added the two-tone look to their sartorial agendas.
With a wealth of silhouettes and colour combinations to choose from, there’s a two-tone style to suit every occasion. For an everyday look, opt for a sleek boot, while slingback styles offer an elegant choice for evening outings. When it comes to materials, look to leather and suede designs in monochromatic hues, such as crisp white bases finished with contrasting black tips. For a bolder take on the trend, opt for a statement pop of colour at the toe.
