Fittingly for a Shakespearean actor, David Tennant celebrated his wedding to Georgia Moffett with a New Year's Eve reception at London's Globe Theatre. Guests including Stephen Fry and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps actor Will Mellor gave the happy couple enthusiastic welcome, cheering as they arrived on the roof garden of the venue.

The party included a fireworks display and a piper. The new Mr and Mrs Tennant had tied the knot in an intimate ceremony the previous day.

A friend said: “David and Georgia are madly in love. They have tried to keep everything quiet and the wedding is for family and closest friends only."

Doctor Who star David, 40, and Georgia, 27, met on the set of the time travel drama three years ago. Georgia had a guest slot as his daughter Jenny. The programme was well known to the actress because her father Peter Davison played the Doctor from 1982 to 1984.

He was overjoyed when they become engaged last Christmas. Peter said: "I'm delighted Georgia has found happiness because she hasn't always had an easy life."

With the marriage the Time Lord becomes stepfather to his bride's nine-year-old son Tyler. The newlyweds also have a daughter named Olive, who was born in March.
