When it was announced that former Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson – more famed for flesh than fashion sense - would be hosting the Lycra British Style Awards the reaction was predictable. Fashionistas poured scorn on the choice and pointed to the actress' well-documented minimalist interpretation of style.
On the night, however, the curvy mother of two showed she was more than capable of cutting the sartorial mustard in a restrained tailored outfit by Stella McCartney. In addition to demonstrating that she "simply oozed style", as the organisers insisted, Pammie also stuck to her moral guns.
The Canadian-born star had agreed to wear a British outfit for the gala, and creations by Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Julien Macdonald had been prepared for her. It appeared to have been overlooked, however, that Pam, who is vice-president of People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals, refuses to wear fur, or the work of designers who use fur in their creations. All three British designers include fur in their collections – and Pam was having none of it, opting instead for a design by Stella McCartney whose own animal rights credentials are impeccable.
"I wouldn't wear clothes designed by a man who put a dead fox on someone's head or had models drag live dogs down the runway like Galliano or McQueen," she told The Telegraph. "They are a disgrace and I'm shocked that any British designers use fur. Britain is a nation of animal lovers and Stella's beautiful clothes prove that you can have a look that kills without killing animals."
