TOP DESIGNERS KEEP IT SHORT AND SWEET AT MILAN SHOWS

28 SEPTEMBER 2006

The world's top design houses have obviously decided that this year's rising hemlines will be riding even higher for spring/summer 2007. Major labels like Prada, Gucci and Moschino have all told their fans "if you've got it, flaunt it" by making mini-skirts the most noticeable trend at Milan Fashion Week.

Sixties chic seemed to be the order of the day when Gucci unveiled its new collection, with a series of models taking to the runway in retro-style outfits that owed more than a little to the revolutionary styles of British legend Mary Quant.

Gucci wasn't the only label taking a step back in time, though, as local maestro Roberto Cavalli likewise opted for brilliantly-hued prints and thigh-skimming cuts when he presented his new line. Moschino's head of design Rosella Jardín apparently caught the swinging decade's flower power bug, too, with minuscule creations that only those with near-perfect pins can carry off.

Flying the flag for Britain was Jenny Packham, who took the theme to a whole new level with vibrant floral desings that confirmed her reputation as the "first lady of partywear". Prada's design gurus meanwhile went for a more refined approach, with sage-green satin and terracotta tones offering a more serious take on the classic mini.

And even the more classic label Burberry was tempted to flash a little thigh. Creative boss Christopher Bailey stuck to mostly neutral shades, but his short floaty dresses in pastel chiffon were nothing if not sensual.
