Kylie Minogue paid tribute to her Shanghai hosts by donning a stunning ivory cheongsam-style dress and Asia-inspired hairdo for a glittering fashion event in Shanghai on Wednesday.

The petite pop princess, whose pixie crop had been styled into cute Mao-era bob, was in the bustling Chinese metropolis to launch her new beachwear line with fashion label H&M as well as help the High Street chain celebrate the opening of its first store in China.

The gala in the city's Science and Technology Museum was a glittering affair, literally, as the 38-year-old star wowed crowds with a performance of Can't Get You Out Of My Head, performing against a backdrop which included five million mirror tiles, 1,000 spinning mirror balls and more than 100kg of Swarovski crystals. Guests had earlier received a musical welcome of a different sort, being serenaded by a 300-strong female choir singing a selection of the Aussie artist's best known works.

At the event attendees were also treated to a sneak peek of the Spinning Around star's new beachwear designs, which include shimmering silver bikinis and water-inspired towels, as well as smock tops and billowy peasant skirts. Kylie was apparently inspired by her own beach wardrobe when it came to creating the line, which includes a much-loved vintage swimsuit dating from the Sixties.

The range goes on sale worldwide next month.
