Jessica Ennis may not have bagged a trophy at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in London on Sunday night, losing out on the title to fellow Olympian Bradley Wiggins. But she certainly triumphed in the style stakes, stunning attendees of the swanky bash with her scarlet, plunging neckline Victoria Beckham maxidress that certainly made the most of the heptathlete's enviable physique. The gold medallist, who blended in with the red carpet, teamed the stunning creation with a simple black clutch bag and a black necklace. She kept her tresses simple, leaving them loose with gentle curls.

But she made sure to ramp up the drama with lashings of black kohl for a gorgeous smokey-eye effect. Also coming out on top in the style stakes was cyclist Victoria Pendleton. The brunette beauty looked to her favourite designer, Stella McCartney, to dress her for the black tie affair. And the champion looked lovely in the simple black number with a peplum hem. Unusual two-tone heels and a berry chain bag completed the look, while her raven looks fell in perfect curls over her shoulders. Rebecca Addlington was also showing off her dark side in a black. The gold medal-winning swimmer looked super glamorous in a plunging black halterneck dress that expertly offset her golden locks.

And gymnast Beth Tweddle kept it short in a monochrome lacy, swing dress that she paired with black tights and sparkly heeled sandals. Kate Middleton, meanwhile, proved that she is on the road to recovery. The royal beauty chose the event to make her return to public life after suffering acute morning sickness. In her first public appearance since leaving the King Edward VII hospital on December 6, Kate presented Olympic cyclist Bradley Wiggins with the title of the nation's favourite sportsman. With husband Prince William now back on RAF duty in Wales, David Beckham was on hand to help with presenting tasks. The expectant mum's period of rest at Kensington Palace had clearly served her well, and she looked glamorous in an emerald Alexander McQueen column. All eyes were on the gown's gathered waist for signs of a burgeoning bump, but while the Duchess of Cambridge isn't showing yet, her radiant glow was undeniable.

Afterwards, the brunette confirmed to fellow presenter Gary Lineker she was doing "very well" following her recent illness, and also told athlete Martine Wright her presenting stint had been "scary". Recipient Bradley Wiggins had no such qualms and was in high spirits as he was decorated with one of the most prestigious titles in the sporting world.
