Madonna steals the show on night of movie mania

Tuesday was a busy night for movie buffs across the pond, with big names taking to the red carpet in both New York and Los Angeles.

Madonna gave students at the Big Apple's Hunter College quite a surprise when she arrived unannounced for a screening of her new documentary I'm Going To Tell You A Secret. In Los Angeles, meanwhile, the Hollywood Film Festival started with a bang thanks to Robert Downey Jr and former Friends star Courteney Cox. The two performers stepped out for the premiere of his crime comedy Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, which was the first feature to be screened at this year's celebration of cinema.

And it wasn't just American stars who were setting the flashbulbs blazing, as Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson were likewise turning heads at the debut of their period drama The White Countess.

It was the Queen of Pop who caused the biggest stir, however, with students at the university gasping in amazement when she made her entrance. The singer was also dressed to impress, using a striking black headband with a lavender flower to complement a cropped sequinned jacket and black trousers.

Afterwards, when the audience quizzed her about the secrets of her success, Madge said she was eager to leave her "Material Girl" days behind. "Being a celebrity, you can get very caught up and seduced into believing and thinking that what you do is the most important thing in the world and get very attached to material things," she explained. "I'm guilty of that and I'm still guilty of that, but hopefully I'm becoming less attached."

Asked if she had any tips about finding happiness amid the pressures of modern life, the 47-year-old revealed that hubby Guy Ritchie was the source of her own contentment. "The best thing to do is find one person in your life and try to love them unconditionally," she said. "If you've accomplished that, you've accomplished a lot."
