As any fashion photographer knows, a good make-up artist can take ten years off their subject's appearance. The cosmetic maestros working on Jennifer Lopez's latest flick have managed to do just the opposite, however, by making the Bronx-born beauty look a decade older.

Having recently set pulses racing all over the world with her sizzling appearance in the Pirelli calendar, the New York-born actress has shown a rather more mature side to her persona on the set of El Cantante. The glamorous performer, who is famous for her flawless honey-toned skin, was barely recognisable when she got down to work on the new movie.

With pale foundation and artificial wrinkles around her eyes and mouth, the 36-year-old looked like any other local going about her business in the sprawling metropolis. Jennifer underwent the transformation for her role as Puchi, the wife of Puerto Rican star Hector Lavoe, in a new biopic of the legendary salsa singer.

The low-budget independent movie, which features her husband Marc Anthony in the lead role, represents something of a departure for its leading lady. J Lo is best known for populist flicks like Monster-In-Law, although she has also appeared in more high-brow fare, such as An Unfinished Life and U-Turn. After appearing alongside her in the romantic comedy Maid In Manhattan, British screen veteran Bob Hoskins affirmed she had the potential to make her name as a serious actress. "I hope she takes some chances and does some really great roles," he said. "I think she has the chops for it."
