'Titanic' star Billy Zane debuts in West End musical

Versatile Hollywood heavyweight Billy Zane showed off some fancy footwork as he waltzed onto the West End stage during the opening night of ballroom dancing comedy Six Dance Lessons In Six Weeks.

The Titanic star, who was cast as Johnny in Dirty Dancing until the dance teacher decided the role was better suited to Patrick Swayze, admits doing the 'cha-cha-cha' on stage was a daunting experience. "I know I have to pull out all the stops, and nerves do creep in from time to time," he said.

Light-footed Billy plays a dancing teacher to an elderly Florida lady, portrayed by experienced stage veteran Claire Bloom. And, having joined the legion of actors-turned-hoofer, he's enthusiastic about the power of the medium. "I’m thrilled that dance is the most popular form of entertainment on TV today. It gives me hope for peace," he explained.

Appearing on the London stage is a dream come true for the nimble star. As a teenager he accompanied his actor parents on a visit to the London capital via an arts programme which included seats for West End plays and post-show discussions. And proud parents William and Thalia were cheering on their son from their seats, alongside actor's sister Lisa and fiancée Kelly Brook. Billy and Kelly, who met on the set of Three and these days divide their time between the US and England, are set to marry next year.
