Eddie Redmayne has spoken for the first time about becoming a father, seven weeks after the birth of his baby daughter Iris. The Oscar-winner and his wife Hannah are currently in Rio with their little girl to watch the Olympic Games, and he was asked about life as a new daddy as he attended the Omega House opening night party on Saturday.

"Well, it's only seven weeks in, but it's amazing. It's wonderful," he said. "All of the stuff you've heard for years, it's all true but utterly extraordinary.

Eddie and Hannah welcomed their baby daughter Iris just seven weeks aho

"We were given the opportunity of coming to Rio; I've never been to South America. The notion of coming to Brazil and Rio was extraordinary. And the idea of bringing Iris on her first trip abroad to the Olympics in Brazil was too much of an extraordinary opportunity to turn down."

Eddie – who is brand ambassador for Omega – also shared his excitement at cheering on Team GB during his time in Rio.

"Jessica Ennis-Hill I think is formidable and a deeply inspiring human being," he said. "Tom Daly is a neighbour of mine. We live quite close to each other in London. There was a documentary on him the other day showing the work he's been putting in since the last Olympic Games, and the kind of tenacity and drive I find mind-blowing. He's a lovely guy."

The star continued: "I love a bit of everything, so I'll be checking out the athletics, and also my wife is really into horse riding so we'll go for the equestrian as well. William Fox-Pitt I've heard has had an amazing year, having been in a coma for a month. And now to be here at the Olympic Games is a pretty dumbfounding story."

Eddie also revealed that he and Hannah have taken the chance to explore the city together. "We went up to the Christ the Redeemer and had a look over the city at night which was, for both my wife and I, unlike anything we'd ever seen," he said.

"But actually, all you need to do in Rio is just sit on Copacabana and let it all wash over you. In my case, apply at lot of sun cream! But generally, just try and take in the atmosphere by osmosis."
