Top night for newcomer Adele as she becomes a Grammy winner

9 FEBRUARY 2009
It was a triumphant night for British musical acts at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, with Coldplay, Adele, Duffy and Robert Plant among those enjoying success in Los Angeles.

Clearly overwhelmed by the evening's events was 20-year-old Londoner Adele who was named best new artist and best pop vocal performance for Chasing Pavements.

"Thank you so much. I'm going to cry," she told the star-studded audience, including Nicole Kidman, Paul McCartney, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce's rapper husband Jay-Z. "I want to thank my mum, she's in London. And Duffy, I love you. I think you are amazing."

And while she may have conceded the best new artist gong, the 24-year-old Welsh starlet didn't walk away empty handed, winning the best pop vocal album prize.

Picking up the prestigious song of the year award for their track Viva La Vida was Chris Martin's band Coldplay, who also scooped a top performance award and the best rock album trophy. "We've never had so many Grammys in our life," said the front man. "We feel so grateful to be here."

Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - who is known for bluegrass music, a cross between country and jazz - were the night's big winners, picking up five awards, including album of the year and record of the year, for their collaboration.

Other winners included Jennifer Hudson, who won her first Grammy award in the R&B category, and Jennifer Aniston's love John Mayer was given the best male pop performance gong.
