DOUBLE VICTORY FOR DENMARK'S DARLINGS

6 JANUARY 2006

Crown Prince Frederik and his wife Princess Mary made quite an impression on their home country's New Year's eve celebrations when they turned out for a lavish party in Christiansborg Palace dressed in full ceremonial attire. The Danish couple doesn't need to dress up to win public favour, though, as the results of two hellomagazine.com polls prove that they, along with their new baby boy, are among Europe's most popular royals.

Almost 5,000 readers logged on to say which royals they would most like to share Christmas lunch with, and Frederik and Mary romped home to victory with almost 50 per cent of the vote. Prince Charles and his sons William and Harry came second with 21 per cent, while the Netherlands' Crown Princess Maxima and her husband Willem-Alexander were in third with 19 per cent. Bringing up the rear were the Monegasque royals, with Prince Albert and his nephews Andrea and Pierre claiming ten per cent.

The indefatigable Danes likewise emerged victorious in our favourite royal baby survey. Frederik and Mary's newborn tot garnered close to half the votes in that poll, leaving little Leonor of Spain, who was born to Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia back in October, in second place. The Dutch royal family's newest member, Princess Alexia, was in third with Norway's Sverre Magnus and Belgium's little Prince Emmanuel finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
