MARY TAKES A LEAF OUT OF A U.S. FIRST LADY'S STYLEBOOK

29 JUNE 2006

There was something very Jackie O about Denmark's Princess Mary on Tuesday. The Tasmanian-born royal arrived for a museum opening in a Sixties-inspired interpretation of this season's fashion staple - the Little White Dress.

With its chic, elegant lines, the cleverly tailored frock distinctly recalled the American icon's graceful look. Mary topped off the outfit with a simple string of pearls and a retro hairdo. All that was missing was a pillar-box hat as the princess exhibited her picture-perfect style at Copenhagen's Glyptotek Museum.

Home to a collection of impressionist masterpieces, antique sculptures and Danish art, the city's famous landmark re-opened this week after a three-year renovation programme.

Along with her husband Prince Frederik, Mary was there to admire the Venetian Renaissance-fronted building, which had got a new foyer and a lick of fresh paint. The museum - which was built in 1897 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the Carlsberg brewery founder - also holds rare works by Paul Gauguin, who lived in Copenhagen during his brief marriage to a Danish woman.
