A sunny morning and a warm welcome awaited the Prince and Princess of Asturias when they kicked off their first official visit to Mexico as husband and wife.
The down-to-earth royal pair arrived on a regular flight at the weekend and opted for a standard suite instead of the two-storey Presidential accommodations – complete with private pool, formal dining room and bathroom sauna – at Mexico City's Hotel Camino Real.
Their low-key arrival didn't translate into a subdued reception, however: hundreds of cheering well-wishers have greeted Felipe and Letizia at every turn. When the couple left to attend a lunch with Mexico's President Vicente Fox, throngs of female fans clamoured for the prince's attention while he and his wife shook hands with the crowd.
But former journalist Letizia, who once worked in Mexico, made a splash of her own, looking elegant in a parade of classic ensembles perfect for the mild weather. The Spanish royal family's newest princess appeared to be completely at ease at her husband's side as they attended a number of public engagements, including a photo exhibition at the Spanish Cultural Centre and a church mass at Guadalupe's Basilica.
