Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue and British singer-songwriter Dido became the queens of the Brit Awards on Wednesday night, taking home two gongs apiece.
Kylie picked up Best International Female and Best International Album – receiving the accolade from fellow antipodean Russell Crowe. Dressed in a stunning micro-mini dress with thigh-length silver boots, the 33-year-old singer was close to tears after accepting the first of her two awards from the Gladiator star.
“I’m feeling a little nervous and emotional,” she said, before going on to thank boyfriend James Gooding and “the people that keep me sane”. When she scooped the best international album award for Fever, the former soap star said simply: “This means so much to me.”
Dido, who little more than a year ago was an unknown performer, scooped the Best British Female and Best British Album awards for her worldwide debut disc No Angel. The 30-year-old Londoner, who hit the big time when her track Thank You was used as the backing for US rapper Eminem’s hit single Stan, said: “I’m a bit overwhelmed by that. I had a lot of fun making the record about five years ago, so it’s amazing to be picking this up tonight.”
Robbie Williams won Best British Male for the third time in four years, while Irish boy band Westlife picked up the Best Pop Act gong. Travis landed the title of Best British Group for the second time after taking the award two years ago, while the Best International Group label went to Destiny’s Child.
Sting, who accepted his Lifetime Achievement award, summed up his feelings on being elected by saying succinctly: “Music is its own reward, that’s all I need to say.”
