Perennial favourite Coronation Street came out on top at this weekend's glamorous British Soap Awards, with one of the hit show's best-loved baddies taking home a record number of gongs.

Actor Brian Capron, who played serial killer Richard Hillman on the programme, took home five individual awards for his popular role. Coronation Street stars notched up a total of nine awards, including best comedy performer Andrew Whyment, and actress Sue Nicholls, who scored a pair of trophies for best dramatic performer and hero of the year.

Accepting the best soap trophy on behalf of the cast, an emotional Bill Roache commented: "All of you here have raised the standard to such a high level that Coronation Street is really drama, not soap. This was a team effort, so well done to the team."

There was no shortage of glitz on the event's red carpet, with lovely ladies from Brookside, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale donning eye-catching frocks for the occasion. One of the few actresses who went demure for the event was EastEnders' Jessie Wallace, who picked up her sexiest female prize wearing an understated, off-the-shoulder gown in basic black.
