Legendary chat show host David Letterman has become a father at the age of 56.

The king of late-night TV told the audience of his popular talk show that girlfriend Regina Lasko gave birth to a baby boy late on Monday night. Harry Joseph Letterman measured 21 inches and weighed in at 9lbs 11oz.

"I could never imagine ever being a part of something that turned out this beautiful," said David the following evening. "I named him after my father. My father passed away when he was 57. I'm 56-years-old, and yesterday I had my first child. So God bless Dad and God bless Harry."

The renowned funny-man missed recording on Monday as he rushed to be at Regina's bedside. His show went ahead as planned, however, as long-suffering band leader Paul Shaffer abandoned his keyboard and took over as host.

Upon his return on Tuesday, David wasted no time in working the birth into his comedy routine. "First thing I did was take him home and dangle him over the balcony," he quipped in reference to an infamous incident involving Michael Jackson.
