Following his arrest on suspicion of assaulting a woman, US hip hop singer Chris Brown has issued a written statement saying he's "sorry and saddened". The apology came a week after Chris and his girlfriend Rihanna pulled out of a planned Grammys appearance amid reports of an altercation to which police were called.

"Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired," said the 19-year-old. "I am seeking the counselling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones, and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person."

The R&B star added that internet posts supposedly from him about the incident were "a fraud".

Police said the singer and a woman – identified in numerous reports as Rihanna - got into an argument while sitting in a parked car in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Hancock Park.

Last week, the Bajan songstress' publicist refused to comment, except to say: "Rihanna is well. Thank you for concern and support".
