Hat trick for One Direction at dazzling MTV Video Music Awards debut

One Direction's debut at the MTV Video Music Awards was a night to remember. Katy Perry's kiss for Liam Payne was the crowning moment of their magical inauguration which saw the boys scoop three gongs.

Best Pop Video, Best New Artist and Most Share Worthy Video are proud tokens of their first foray at the event. "We've grown up watching this show and to even be here is an honour," Niall Horan said from the stage. It caps an amazing year for One Direction – who are Louis Tomlinson, 20, Zayn Malik, 19, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne, all 18.

The former X Factor lads set the tone for a night of British success. Coldplay snared Best Rock Video for their single Paradise, but missed out on the ceremony due to touring commitments. Scottish DJ Calvin Harris was also recognized for his smash hit Feels So Close.

Meanwhile, Rihanna came close to grappling the spotlight from One Direction. She opened the show with an explosive performance of new single Cockiness (I Love It), and continued her set with the hit We Found Love – which earned her Video of the Year.

The Bajan beauty also sported a brand new pixie crop, which is the latest in a long line of looks for the star. Her ex boyfriend Chris Brown was the second big winner of the night, going home with two awards.Eyebrows were raised when the former couple were spotted sharing a congratulatory kiss onstage.

Pop veterans Pink and Alicia Keys lit up the stage with their new material, and songstress Taylor Swift shed her country belle image for the night. Sporting shades, hot pants and a slick of killer red lipstick, 22-year-old Taylor worked the audience with her single We Are Never Getting Back Together – and ended her night crowdsurfing in true rock star style.
