Kate Winslet and her husband Ned Rocknroll made a rare public appearance together in New York this week. The day after celebrating Kate's 40th birthday, the couple were spotted hand-in-hand and looking blissfully happy as they stepped out in the Big Apple on Tuesday.

Mum-of-three Kate was dressed down for the occasion but still looked stylish in jeans, a loose sweater, black ankle boots and a skull-print scarf. She wore her blonde hair loose around her shoulders and had chosen a pink lipstick to add a pop of colour. Ned, meanwhile, looked dapper in a grey waistcoat over a white shirt with rolled-up sleeves, and trousers.

The couple have been married since December 2012, and are parents to son Bear Blaze Winslet, who was born in England in December 2013. They met in August 2011, while Kate was holidaying on Necker Island – owned by Ned's uncle Sir Richard Branson.

Kate has been married twice before; she has a daughter Mia, who turns 15 this month, with film maker Jim Threapleton, and an 11-year-old son, Joe, from her marriage to Spectre director Sam Mendes.

In a recent interview with WSJ magazine, Kate heaped praise on her husband of three years. "Thank god for Ned – really," she said. "He's just so incredibly supportive, and he's so much fun. He's absolutely everything to me. And to all of us."

The star also opened up about her failed marriages to Jim (from 1998 to 2001) and Sam (from 2003 until 2010). "I know lots of people who are not in the public eye who have gone through several marriages, I really do," Kate said. "And it's just those are the cards life dealt me. I didn't plan on it being that way."

She added: "No one really knows what has happened in my life. No one really knows why my first marriage didn't last; no one knows why my second didn't. And I'm proud of those silences."
