6 of the most bizarre celebrity homes ever built

Rather than residing in a simple million-dollar mansion, Johnny Depp decided to purchase an entire French village for his family to live in, featuring everything from a skate park to a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed wine cellar.

The father of two bought the 37-acre estate near Saint Tropez in 2001, and poured millions of dollars into renovating the sprawling home. Johnny's hideaway featured 15 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, two swimming pools, a restaurant with a professional kitchen, and a former church that was converted into a guest house.

Three years after Johnny and his longtime partner, Vanessa Paradis, split in 2012, the actor put the village estate on the market for £19 million, but the property never sold.

The tattoo artist and TV personality purchased a historic three-storey home in Los Angeles in 2016 for £4.8 million, and spent six years restoring the property into a gothic dream. 

The home was originally built in 1896 by Isaac Newton Van Nuys in the Victorian style, and was done up by Kat with her personal style in mind.

The mansion featured 11 bedrooms, eight-and-a-half bathrooms, a separate carriage house, a grand salon, a hidden bar with a secret door, and a theatre. 

The pièce de résistance is the blood red pool in the backyard, which perfectly aligns with Kat's gothic aesthetic. 

The star sold her home in 2023 for £6.3 million when she moved to Indiana, and released a documentary chronicling the restoration of the house.

Céline Dion and her late husband, René Angélil, splurged on a five-acre plot of land in 2008, and decided to build the ultimate hideaway in Florida for their growing family. 

The home was completed after two years of construction, featuring 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, and most importantly, a water park complete with two pools, slides, water cannons and a river.

The Bahamas-inspired home went on to sell for £28.2 million in 2017, a year after René passed away from throat cancer.

While John Travolta's £7.3 million Florida home isn't too out of the ordinary compared to other celebrity homes, it's his personal airport that sets it apart. 

John and his late wife, Kelly Preston, built the mansion in the early 2000s, and included five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms and a 16-car garage.

As the home was built at Jumbolair Aviation Estates, it also includes an airport and an airstrip, with space to park private jets if need be.

"It was always John's dream to have planes in his front yard – to practically be able to pull up to the house – so that when you wanted to go to dinner, all you'd have to do was step out the door, get on the plane and whisk off," Kelly told Architectural Digest in 2004.

"And we fly in and out a lot. Last year when Johnny was shooting a movie in Tampa, he flew to and from work every day. Each night the kids and I would go out in the golf cart, watch the landing, then bring Johnny to the house while the plane taxied in. It was very exciting."

Michael Jackson's famed Neverland Ranch featured everything from a functioning train to a Ferris wheel, and the entertainer spent more than £25.7 million creating an amusement park that children of all ages could enjoy.

He bought the Santa Barbara County property in 1988 for £12.5 million, and got to work building railroads, a petting zoo, multiple rides and arcade games, a movie theatre and a lake, before dubbing the property "Neverland Ranch" as a homage to Peter Pan.

"Neverland was a living fairy tale, which Michael created to finally have a normal childhood and life for himself," his sister, La Toya Jackson, wrote in her book Starting Over.

"He would never have been able to [enjoy] a trip to the movies or the zoo, in the real world. So he created every possible source of entertainment he could desire for himself inside his own private world."

The property was raided by police in 2003 due to criminal investigations, after which Michael vowed to never return. He passed away in 2009, leaving Neverland to be put up for sale.

It was initially put on the market for £73.3 million in 2015, but failed to sell for years, before Michael's financial advisor purchased the property for just £16.1 million in 2020.

Kim Kardashian's ultra-minimalist home in Los Angeles has drawn criticism over the years for its monochromatic colour palette and cold, sterile feel. 

She bought the property in 2014 for £19.1 million alongside her ex-husband, Kanye West, and the couple spent tens of millions creating the minimalist interior before they moved in 2018.

Whenever Kim or Kanye showed glimpses of the mansion online, social media users quickly compared it to a morgue or even a prison due to its extreme minimalism. 

Even their eldest daughter, North West, is not a fan, as Kim shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show's Mom Confessions.

"Every time I get into some kind of disagreement with my daughter North, she thinks this is a dig to me, and she'll say, 'Your house is so ugly. It's all white. Who lives like this?'" the reality TV star explained.

"She just thinks it gets to me, and it is kind of mean because I like my house." When Kim and Kanye divorced in 2022, she bought out his half of the house and is now the sole owner.
