The 1990s rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You remains an ultimate cosy-season staple, and few fans can forget the iconic English-class poem delivered by Julia Stiles' character.
Taking in more than $53 million worldwide at the box office upon its release, the film remains widely celebrated today, with Julia recently dedicating a tribute dance to Heath Ledger during her run on Dancing with the Stars.
Despite the film's enduring cult status, Andrew Keegan, who played self-absorbed model Joey Donner, has revealed the surprising sums he still earns from the teen classic. Opening up about the harsh realities of residual cheques from his hit 1990s films and television projects, which include The Broken Hearts Club, Full House, and 7th Heaven, the actor laid bare the financial reality behind screen stardom.
Here is a closer look at what he still earns from the beloved teen romantic comedy, alongside the ongoing film royalties banked by some of Hollywood's biggest stars...
The 47-year-old explained that 10 Things I Hate About You still provides his largest royalty payouts across his entire career catalogue.
During an appearance on The McBride Rewind podcast in May 2026, he noted that the residual cheques across his various projects range from $80 down to as little as a single cent.
"I think it's really funny because I'll get different shows obviously, but I'll get one-cent cheques and it costs like 40 cents to send," he said, adding: "One cent is not worth my time."
"I think 10 Things is the biggest residuals," he continued. "There are still residuals that come from all those shows, like $10, $20, $50, $80, right?"
Andrew is far from the only performer receiving underwhelming residual cheques, although some Hollywood stars continue to bring in millions each year.
Pamela Anderson was part of a movement when she starred as C.J. Parker on Baywatch from 1992 to 1997, but according to her son, Brandon, she makes just $4,000 per year in residuals. "That's a crime," he told Extra.
Mandy Moore starred as Rebecca Pearson in six seasons of This Is Us, but her residual checks are "very tiny," ranging from a penny to 81 cents, despite the hit show's streaming deal with Hulu. "The residual issue is a huge issue," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023.
The Brady Bunch star Eve Plumb, who played Jan Brady on the hit sitcom from 1969 to 1974, revealed in her memoir, Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond, that she earns nearly nothing in residuals from the show. "If I had a dime for every rerun episode, I'd pay off the national deficit," she wrote, adding: "I don't."
John Mahoney, who died in 2018, made "a ton of money" starring as Martin Crane on Frasier, he told the Chicago Tribune in 2004. While he didn't disclose the amount, it was apparently "enough" to ensure he didn't have to "worry" about his next job.
Everybody Loves Raymond star Ray Romano is sitting pretty all the way to the bank as he reportedly rakes in $18 million per year from reruns of the sitcom, which ran from 1996 to 2005, according to Forbes.
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry
Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe Buffay from 1994 to 2004, revealed in May 2026 that she and the Friends cast each earn a whopping $20 million a year in residuals from the show. "Because Phoebe Buffay was so great?" she told The Timeswhen asked why the checks were so high. Matthew's earnings, meanwhile, more than likely go to his estate following his death in 2023.
