Sparkling jewels shine on the red carpet

The only things possibly shining as bright as the star power at Sunday night's Oscars were the millions of dollars worth of dazzling gems donned by the glamorous women gracing the ceremony.

Red-hot best actress winner Charlize Theron's gown was complemented by long earrings finished off with a cluster of gems, the 46-diamond set appropriately named the "Shooting Star". Meanwhile, another of the evening's golden girls, Renee Zellweger, also looked like a million dollars. That's because she was sporting $1 million worth of Cartier jewels, including a 73-carat oval- and pearl-shaped diamond necklace and a 35-carat diamond bracelet.

Diamonds were truly a girl's best friend on the red carpet, with nearly every actress on the scene wearing baubles spotlighting the precious gem. Diamond drops were the accessory of choice for Patricia Clarkson, Naomi Watts and Uma Thurman, who also wore a multiple strand necklace.

Long and thin "stiletto" earrings like Charlize's were also spotted on Julia Roberts and Holly Hunter. Diane Lane, like fellow glamour girls Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie, kept the earrings simple, wearing six-carat diamond studs from Harry Winston.

Tomb Raider star Angelina, however, turned heads with another piece of jewellery, a stunning multi-gem cascading necklace. Also wearing eye-catching jewels around her throat was Nicole Kidman, whose 195-carat choker, accentuated with a large diamond flower, was custom-designed by L'Wren Scott for Bulgari.
