Classic movie glamour took a back seat on the opening night at Cannes after several stars opted for A Midsummer Night's Tale-style approach, opting for faery creations in dreamy pastel hues.

Leading the way was Cate Blanchett, who evoked memories of her elf queen character in Lord Of The Rings with her delicate Armani Prive design in peach.

The hue flattered the actress' alabaster complexion, while the skirt's romantic ruffles showed off her slim post-pregnancy silhouette after the birth of her third son last month.

Julianne Moore, who's also famed for her porcelain beauty, had chosen a similarly fantastic ruched gown. With its flower detailing, crystal studding on the waistline and feather-trimmed straps, the chiffon Christian Lacroix gown epitomised the evening's impromptu other-worldly theme.

Displaying similarly ethereal tastes was Israeli model Bar Rafaeli. Leonardo DiCaprio's ex floated down the red carpet in a fairy princess-style gown with crystal detailing at the neckline by Alberta Ferretti.
